I first discovered Yin Yoga when I was traveling in India. I met a woman who showed me Paul Grilley’s book entitled Yin Yoga. A couple times a week we met upstairs in one of the ashram’s yoga rooms where me, her and anyone else who was interested would practice. I distinctly remember, after our very first practice session, walking down the stairs to the meal hall and feeling very light and tingly. Five years later in Vermont, pregnant and recovering from a respiratory/anxiety disorder, Yin Yoga, coupled with Restorative and meditation, were my main practice for almost a year. My body needed both to heal and to create space for the new being about to enter my life. Yin felt deeply rich and just so right for me at that time. I spent many afternoons lying on the floor at the Chace Mill. In the practice we hold poses in a relaxed position for at least three minutes, but there were times where I held poses for up to forty minutes. It enabled me to slow down, to heal, and allowed my nervous system to re-balance. As a result, I think, I had a wonderful birth experience and am blessed with a mellow baby whose para-sympathetic nervous system (the part of our nervous system that enables us to relax) is especially in tact. I am continuing to heal from my illness, but feeling so much better than I was. I am able to see the day where I will be completely healed which was not in focus for me just one year ago. I am excited to be offering a Yin Yoga and Meditation series, where you will have the chance to explore this healing practice which is also excellent preparation for meditation.

The six week Yin Yoga series begins June 29 at the Vermont Center for Yoga and Therapy. Tuesday nights 5:30-7 pm. Pre-register here.

“I find that what I experience after a yin yoga session is different from the feeling after yang yoga, or after other exercise forms. It reminds me of the feeling I get from practicing tai chi. It is not so much the presence of great stretch, or heat, or blood pounding through the body, or anything outwardly obvious like that. In fact, it is notable more for the lack of any soreness, tightness, or hindrances. Its as if everything is simply and calmly as it should be. Its understated, and hard to pin down, or quantify. The joints work, the posture finds itself to be correct, and the rest of the day invevitably goes more smoothly.” – yoga student Robert Shapiro

Try Yin Yoga Tuesday nights 5:40 pm at Yoga Vermont in the Chase Mill.
